Gun Rights Advocates Will Continue to “Stand Their Ground”.

The 2017 Legislative Session in Minnesota is going into its final hours, and the frustration of gun rights advocates could not be more apparent. With Minnesota being a very blue state, finding a voice is always hard for gun owners and those who continue to fight for their Constitutional rights. The last 8 years have been especially difficult to get any new bills to the floor. The push has been hard and purposeful, both publicly and behind the scenes. The elections in 2014 and 2016 were especially notable, as advocates poured significant time and money into the GOP majority; hoping they would be reciprocal in representing its constituents.

Two bills that have received nationwide publicity are HF188 – Constitutional Carry, and HF238 – Stand your Ground. With much disappointment, HF188 never even received so much as a nod from our Republican legislators and failed a last-ditch attempt to attach it to the 2017-2018 Omnibus bill. With only a few hours left, the scramble is on to hopefully get HF238 a floor vote.

I know that Speaker Kurt Daudt is being inundated with calls, emails, and messages from gun owners and advocates from across the state, myself being one of them. If this bill doesn’t get a floor vote, the GOP in Minnesota will not be looked upon favorably in the 2018 and 2020 elections.

It’s up to us, ‘We the People’, to continue to hold our elected officials accountable for the promises they make. If they don’t, we will definitely remind them in the future when we vote them out of office.
