2016 Northern Great Plains Regional Championship - Bismarck/Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2016 Northern Great Plains Long Range Regional Championship on September 10 and 11.  This year we had 35 competitors compared to 24 competitors in 2015.  We had 34 competitors in 2014 and 20 competitors in 2013.  Seems we are kind of continuing our up and down in attendance each year.  Overall our numbers seem to be picking up a bit and hopefully, that will continue.

As always, talk with your shooting buddies and get them out to shoot.  There are a couple more events this year including the 2016 North Dakota Mid-Range State Championship in Rolla on September 24 in Rolla – check the match schedule at the end of this bulletin.

Thanks to Bob Cunningham and Steven Allen for running the firing line and posting our scores.  Thanks also goes out to Mike Dahl (a new competitor from Bismarck).  Mike made our trophies this year.  I also need to thank Bob, Mike, Tom and Pat Headrick, Dale Toman, Dave and Amanda Hintz and John Lenarz.  These folks came out several times during the past couple weeks to help me get the range ready for this event – we spent a lot of time re-facing targets, working on the carriers, cleaning the pits and the impact area and, mowing the range.  I really appreciate their help! It takes a lot of effort before the event to get things ready.  I couldn’t get the match done without their help – THANKS AGAIN!

We finally had some respectable weather this year.  However, since the winds were light on Saturday – they were variable in speed and direction – which made it tough once again.  Several competitors put shots waaaay left and waaay right through their shot strings.

Congratulations to our 2016 Northern Great Plains Regional Match Winners, Tom Thompson (Bismarck).  Tom fired a 972-26x for the Conventional match win. Our Silver Medalist from Ipswich, South Dakota, was Ryan Holien with a 965-31x.

In the F-Open Class, the match went down to the last match.  Brian Suhr from Cooperstown, ND, fired a 971-29x for the Gold.  Eric Johnson from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, fired a 969-33x for the Silver.

Finally, in the F-Target Rifle Class, Drew Rutherford (Horace, ND) and Dave Rohrich (Mandan, ND) traded Match Wins with Drew finally coming out on top with a very respectable 961-25x for the Gold.

We had a few records fall again this year.  Brian Suhr (and Eric Johnson) both fired 200-13x in Match 4 in the F- Open Class.  This is the first time we’ve had a clean score fired in a 20 shoot string on the F-Class 1000 yard Target in North Dakota.  Brian’s score is the new State Record for the F-Open class. Kind of makes a statement as to the challenging weather conditions we face in this state.  Drew Rutherford fired 197-7x for a new state record, 20 shot string at 1000 yards in the F-Target Rifle category.  Drew’s aggregate score of 961-25x is also a state record.  This score bested the previous state record by 35 points set by Dave Rohrich (926-19x) just last year (Dave’s score this year would have also been a new state record).  Seems to me the old 308 ain’t giving up much anymore.  There’s been a LOT of bullet development in the past couple years (for bullets in every caliber) and it seems it’s leveling the playing field no matter what caliber you’re shooting.

Well – this season – is once again coming to an end.  There are a 2 more events on the calendar this year. On Saturday, September 24, the Turtle Mountain Rifle Club will host the 2016 North Dakota Mid-Range State Championship – 3 – 20 shot strings (with unlimited sighters) at 600 yards.  This will be for Conventional, F- Open and F/TR Classes.  Then on Sunday, September 26, they will have the annual Bruce Alexander Memorial High Power match (80 shot over-the-course).  Call Andy Johnson as soon as possible to reserve your firing point.  Rolla has ONE motel - the Bilmar.  So make your reservations soon if you would like to stay in Rolla.

If you have never fired at the David Disrud Range in Rolla, you’ve got to shoot there.  Finally, The Frosty Barrel Match, (F-Open, F/TR and Conventional), will be held in Grand Forks on October 8th.  There is also a chili feed with this event.  Contact Mike Cobert for details.

The 2017 5-Buckel Overshoe Match will be at our range in Bismarck the weekend of May 6 and 7, 2017 (that would be next year).  I hope to see all of you, and more new shooters on the firing line next year.
