2019 Summer Matches - Bismarck/Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association

Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2019 Summer High Power Matches on July 6 and 7, 2019.  We had an OK turnout for our summer matches this year.  This year we had 35 entries for the 3 events compared to 62 entries last year.  So we were down a fair amount.  No doubt this is not a good weekend for matches being right after the 4th of July (on Thursday this year).  I’ll try and schedule this event later in July so we are further away from the holiday for future events.

As usual, A BIG thanks goes out to Bob Cunningham.  Bob gave up his Saturday afternoon to run the line for the Palma match and to help post scores, etc., etc.  This makes it way easier for me when I have some help to run the line and all the other things that need to get done at an event.  Thanks again!

And speaking of the Palma event – this was the first long range event in North Dakota that I know of to use all electronic targets for the match - and it worked out excellent!  Thanks to Tom Headrick for providing the Silver Mountain e-target and Morgen Dietrich, Troy Goltz and Drew Rutherford for providing the Shot Marker e-targets.  Thanks to Tom and Morgen who set up a couple of our regular targets to be used for the Shot Marker targets.  When Troy and Drew arrived on Saturday with their Shot Marker targets – it was mostly plug in the equipment – do a quick calibration check and we were ready for the match.  There was a bit of a learning curve on the firing line for instruction on the e-target setup for smart phones, iPads users, etc. After a short time for instruction - it was move to firing line and get on with the match.  Once we got off the 800 yard line, things ran very quickly at the 900 and 1000 yard lines.

We had 4 shooters on 3 targets and 3 shooters on one target (15 shooters for the Plama match) – so there was 4 relays.  It usually takes about 1 ½ hours to fire one relay - so 4 relays would take about 6 hours to fire the match.  Using the e-targets we completed firing at about 4:15pm. Total match time was about 3 hours, 15 minutes or just about ½ of the time that it would have taken for a convention match with competitors pulling targets in the pits.  No one in the pits and no pit changes does save a lot of time.

Of about 900 sighters and record shots fired – I think there was 1 missed shot.  So the e-targets missed 0.11% of the total shots fired.  I think this is very acceptable because when target are pulled from the pits – there is usually way more missed shots than that.  Needless to say, I am making plans to use e-targets for the Regional Championship in September if possible.

Congratulations to our Palma match winners – Tom Thompson (443-18x) in Conventional and Todd Zaun (441-15x) in the F-Class.  I ended up combining classes since we had a low turnout.  Hopefully, we can get some more folks out here to fire the Regional in September.

Congratulations to our 2019 Bismarck/Mandan M1 Garand Club Champion – John Lenarz from Bismarck. John fired an impressive 270-4x over the 300 point course. John has been making trips to the range this summer working on the Garand and the Service rifle (as well as long range) and his scores are showing. It should be a good Garand match at the State Championship in a couple weeks in Grand Forks. Thanks also to Mark Ness. Mark brought out daughter Morgen and son-in-law Alec Jacobs to the Garand match. Morgen and Alec need to get involved in the High Power game back in their home state of Wyoming. Thanks for coming.

Sunday – well – we didn’t have enough non-Distinguished competitors to award Leg points for the match.  So we ran the match as a CMP registered 50 shot match.  Match winner was Morgen Dietrich with a very good score of 473-13x and Ryan Karrar finished 2nd with a 470-9x.  Yup – the winds at the Moffit range were picking up on Sunday challenging shooters in the standing stage (apparently Tom Headrick figured it out tho).  New shooter Tom Halcrow joined us for the match on Sunday.  We hope to see him at many matches down the road.

The FINAL High Power event at our range this year will be the Northern Great Plains Regional Championship the weekend of September 7 and 8.  This event is a 2 day, 100 shots for record, Long Range Regional Event for Conventional, F-Open and the F-Target Rifle Classes.  We will shoot 3 – 20 shot matches on Saturday, and 2 – 20 shot matches on Sunday (with unlimited sighters for each match – so make sure you bring enough ammo).  All matches will be fired from 1000 yards.  Please plan to attend – pass the word and bring a friend along.  This is also the weekend of the United Tribes International Powwow in Bismarck – so hotel rooms are usually tight.  Therefore, if you plan to attend this 2 day event – start making your hotel reservations now.  As stated – I am working to have all e-targets for this match.  I should know more on this as we get closer to the event.  I’ll be sending out my match program by e-mail sometime in August for this event.

Like I say every year - summers are short and winters are long in this part of the country (summers are sooo short).  We ONLY have 6 more High Power events this YEAR (and don’t forget the Outdoor Pistol State Championship).  So make your plans and save the dates.  The remaining match schedule is listed below.  Thanks again and I hope to see everyone at the rest of the events this season.
