How to Start a Blog
In 3 Easy Steps!
1. Domain Name and Host Company
2. Install WordPress
3. Design your Blog
LET’S GET STARTED!
1. DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING COMPANY
Have you decided what you want to call yourself?
This will be your Domain Name, so make sure it clearly says what your blog is about. Be creative and brain-storm. Just remember, though, this will be the name that “brands you”, and will either attract people to your blog, or make them uninterested and less likely to visit or recommend your blog to others.
The next thing you’ll want to do is find out if the Domain Name you’ve chosen is already being used. A Domain Name is like fingerprints, and is unique to only one site. If it’s already being used, you will have to come up with and alternative. To do this, head on over to Bluehost and do a name search. This will tell you if it’s available or not. If you already have a Domain Name and want to transfer from another Host, you can do that too.Now that you’ve chosen your Domain Name, you need to decide who you want to “host” your blog. This means you’ll need to rent space on the internet to showcase your blog. I went with Bluehost because they have affordable rates, and if you use their services, they will give you your Domain Name for FREE!
You will be asked to choose a your Plan Level. If you’re not sure which one is best, I would pick the BASIC PLAN. You will have to pay for a full year up front, but it will save you quite a bit in end as opposed to paying monthly.
After you select your service plan, you will be given the option to add extras to your plan. Setup for your domain is FREE, and your Domain Name Registration is also FREE. The options listed are not necessary to start your blog, but I would at least opt for the Domain Privacy Protection. It’s only $0.99 per month, and will keep your personal address and phone number from being publicly displayed. All the other options can be added on in the future if choose.
The rest of the steps in Registration are the usual, enter your Billing Information:

WOOHOO! REGISTRATION IS DONE!
2. INSTALL WORDPRESS
The next thing you’ll need to do is install WordPress. This is the software that’s needed to setup, design, and control your blog. I use WordPress for my blog, and you’ll find that several major companies also use WordPress as well. It’s easy to use and install.
Follow these steps: Login into your new Bluehost account. (this is also called your cpanel)
Now that you have accessed your cpanel, look for the section titled, “WEBSITE”, and find the “INSTALL WORDPRESS” icon:
You are now ready to install WordPress and will be directed through a series of prompts:
After installing WordPress, you can sign into your WP DASHBOARD. This is the Administrative part of your blog, and where you’ll be able to design, write posts, and see information that pertains to your blog.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are now the proud owner of your own blog!
3. DESIGN YOUR BLOG
This is where the real fun begins. You now need to choose a THEME for your blog. A theme is like a stencil. It will give you an outline for your blog, and all you have to do is fill in the blanks. There are tons of companies to choose from and it can be mind-boggling. I tried several before finally finding one that really worked for me. Unless you are having a professional design your blog, make sure you pick a theme that comes with reliable TECHNICAL SUPPORT. I cannot stress this enough. You will have many questions and need help when designing your theme, and the last thing you want to do is to wait around for help. I would recommend also looking at other people’s blog/website. It will give you lots of ideas as to what you may want to include in yours. Are you ready? Great… let’s get started!
