The Eau Claire National Rifle Club hosted an OTC tournament on April 30 following the previous day’s 4 x 600 mid-range. A total of 19 competitors showed up Sunday morning despite the threat of rain, the cool temperatures, and a gusty NE wind. Seventeen competitors shot service rifles and two shot match rifles.
Several shooters managed strong standing scores in spite of the low temps and gusty winds. The most notable scores were Rich Boyarski’s 191-4X and my score of 195-5X. Great shooting Rich! Rich kept them all in the black which was no small feat considering the cold and gusty conditions.
The 200 yard sitting rapid-fire stage showed better scores but no one managed to clean the target. Larry Weidell’s 199-7X put him at the head of the pack for sitting. Dave Holub and James Melville tied for second with 198-7X’s. Decent scores!
At the 300 yard line, Josh Hanrahan and I both put up cleans for prone rapid-fire.
The 600 yard prone stage was pretty rough on everyone. The wind was variable and switching quite quickly. I got caught for three 9’s despite doing my best to watch the flags and make windage adjustments for almost every shot. Kaleb Hall, Josh Hanrahan, and Bryan Melville all managed respectable 193’s with their service rifles.
As always, the Melvilles ran a great match! Everyone had fun and it was good to see several unclassified shooters getting their feet wet. Hopefully, as the spring progresses, a few more match rifle shooters will crawl out of hibernation and make it to a OTC match or two!
